Yamato Japanese Restaurant

My friends really enjoy sushi and I really enjoy food. Suffice to say, we found ourselves driving two hours east to Yamato Japanese Restaurant - where the raw fish are plentiful and tables are not. [Make a reservation unless you want to wait.]

You can order a la carte, but I believe most people come here for the buffet. Lunch ($16.99) is limited to sushi, makimoto and hand rolls, while dinner ($22.99 - 24.99) includes sashimi, combinations and dessert.
Menu and buffet ordering form
The quality of the fish is sometimes questionable - see the suspiciously red tuna below - but for the quantity, Yamato provides more than enough options to satisfy the average consumer. I would recommend reading their menu though, as their interpretation of "basic" rolls may not coincide with yours.
Stripes and striations
When we ordered too many "dragon rolls"...
Another plus to this buffet is the parking. Street parking is free (but limited) unless you unfortunately visit during street cleaning hours.

Come to gorge and if you know of any other sushi buffets - preferably priced for those on a budget - please let me know!
A departing photograph from me to entice you.

Monica Visits, Day 6

Today is Monica's last day in Amherst and also the first day Pita Pockets is open - what a lucky break for Monica.

Lunch:
Roasted beets & goat cheese sandwich, carnival cookie, sweet potato chips, sweet potato chunks, cherry tomatoes, carrots, broccoli
(Too little filling, too much bread. The ratio could have definitely been improved.)

Day Trip to Boston with Monica

Coffee at 1369 Coffee House - Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA:
Mexican hot cocoa + shot of espresso
(Woke up at an ungodly hour to drive to Boston and desperately needed some caffeine. I could not decide between my favourite cortado or this house-made Mexican hot cocoa so I compromised. Not sweet, slight fiery kick and mildly bitter - exactly what I needed. It was a bit overpriced, but still on par with Amherst cafes, so it was still worth it.)

Snowed In

I had elaborate plans in Northhampton today, but it snowed last night and the roads were still blanketed.

Breakfast at The Lone Wolf, Amherst, MA:
Vegan Florentine (w/vegan hollandaise on the side)
(The vegan hollandaise was awful! It tasted like horchata gone bad. Everything else was mediocre, except for the homefries - which were delicious as usual.)

Monica Visits, Day 2

Brunch at The People's Pint, Greenfield, MA:
Special ploughman's platter: apple, apple thyme applesauce, cheddar cheese, salted almonds, leek & onion cinnamon scone (shared w/sister)
(The platter was a bit polarised; the apples, cheese and nuts naturally complemented each other, and the cheese and scone were a great pairing as well. The applesauce was like an outsider, only really pairing nicely with the scone although I thought its flavour overpowered the herbs. I prefer my apples crisp, this was rather soft. The scone also tasted like a leek and onion cheese scone, not cinnamon.)

Good-bye, California!

Heading back to the East Coast tonight and my sister is coming along with me too! Should be an interesting week.

Breakfast:
Tiny slice of brozo's pizza
(My mother used to make this pizza for us in high school for breakfast. It's also piled with sausage and pepperoni, so I could only snag a corner of his slice.)

When the werewolves howl*,

my mother and meat-loving sister become vegetarians. I wish the moon was always full, because the dining table is so much more fun.

[*No, really, the labrador next door was howling all night.]

Brunch (bought from Dong Phuong Tofu, San Jose, CA):
Various vegetarian selections (L to R): fried tofu, tofu "spam musubi sushi", stuffed jalapeno peppers, fried tofu wrapped in brined soybean, tomato braised tofu wrapped in brined soybean
(Essentially all tofu cooked in some minor variation.)

Happy birthday, Nathalie!

Breakfast:
Brown rice w/veg pulp & seaweed, sauteed spinach & tofu
(Made lunch for my mother to take to work today! I asked her to give me her thoughts on it, and she said, "it's okay".  When asked why, she told me that there was no meat in it and that it cannot be good if there's no meat. Well, then.)
