Last day of August!

How is it September already?

Brunch:
Roasted potatoes, cranberry apple chutney, baked sweet potatoes w/cinnamon & pb, chickpeas, nomad salad, kale & beans, broccoli, corn muffin, baby carrots
(One of the most appetizing plates of food I've had at Val. I think it was mostly because most of the flavour spectrum was present - sweet, tarty, salty, savoury, spicy - and there was a range of textures.)

30 August 2014

Almost the whole gang is back at Amherst! :)

Brunch:
Oregon chai berry muffin, strawberries
(I like this new fresh fruit of the day option. Granted, they're not the sweetest strawberries but at least we have them.)

Back in Val...

I was so exhausted that I slept through my gazillion alarms and woke up for lunch, only to fall back asleep several hours later.

Breakfast/Lunch:
Goji berry granola w/banana slices, cinnamon & rice milk, grapefruit half
(And it's back to Val food, which always requires some adjustment time. The grapefruit didn't taste all that great, but I guess the fact that they're now offerred is an improvement.)

Good-bye Philadelphia, hello Amherst!

It's been over a year but I'm finally back after a long train ride! Amtrak is actually pretty nice and I liked being able to work on my laptop.

Thanks to all my Philly peeps for making my summer enjoyable and quite the memorable one.

Breakfast:
Kale, pineapple & mango smoothie (drank about four sips)

Last day in Philadelphia!

Since I'm leaving for Amherst tomorrow, I decided to walk around Philadelphia one last time.

Breakfast:
Rest of the iced coffee, quinoa porridge w/seaweed, dried cranberries, cinnamon, cayenne pepper & cacao nibs
(The coffee was still good the next day and was quite good with my salty-sweet porridge.)

Happy National Dog Day!

Today features most of my favourite edibles: juices, smoothies, coffee, pizza and burgers. All-American at heart, although my heart is probably not thanking me for this.

Breakfast (partially from Ryan Crown's Juice Club, Philadelphia, PA)::
Lemon ginger blast juice: lemon, ginger, parsley, cilantro, cucumber, celery, apples, arugula & habernero pepper
Kale, pineapple, mango & almond flour smoothie
(I believe the blast comes from the pepper, and it really can be a blast of heat. The juice has an interesting flavour wave of spicy and refreshing.)

25 August 2014

I turned in my black key today - leaving in less than three days!

Breakfast:
Tea, chocolate quinoa porridge w/cinnamon, cayenne pepper, silvered almonds, almond flour, cacao nibs, dried cranberries, walnut bits & a bit of tumeric
(I woke up this morning and even though the temperature was 76 °F, I felt really cold and turned on the heat. Probably the only apartment with the central heat on. This breakfast also helped warm me up.)

Studying in style!

I like to spend Saturday being lazy and Sunday being productive because Monday is usually more demanding than Sunday. It just aligns the flow of the week if I ease back into working.

Breakfast at Ryan Crown's Juice Bar, Phildelphia, PA:
Alter-native juice: lemon, astragalus root, apple, ginger root & mineral water
(My new favourite blend! This is so, so refreshing. It's almost like a more savoury lemonade but not quite; I might just be saying that because it's not tarty like lemonade but the juice has that citrus refreshing factor. Definitely something I'd get again and again. On a side note, I totally meant to go in and grab maybe one or two juices before heading to a coffee shop to study. However, my friend was working so I ended up just studying vocab at the juice bar.)

23 August 2014

Breakfast:
Assorted veggies w/quinoa & oats mixture
(I think I threw the rest of the broccoli, assorted bell peppers, brussel sprouts, asparagus and artichoke hearts into the pot but I could have forgotten a vegetable. The quinoa and oatmeal mixture was quinoa flakes, oatmeal, tumeric, ground flaxseed and almond flour. This reminds me of what I ate in high school for dinners.)

Last on location work day!

Well, my last full week in Philadelphia is over and today was my last day in the "fields". Summer always passes by much too quickly.

Breakfast:
Oatmeal w/ground flaxseeds, almond flour, asparagus spears, broccoli, kale, assorted bell peppers, seaweed, cinnamon & cayenne pepper
(Pantry staple number one: oatmeal/quinoa. My parents can't live without rice, I can't live without oatmeal/quinoa.)

21 August 2014

I wake up at five most mornings, and it's incredibly frustrating to go out and wish that I could just try out some interesting eatery on the way back to my apartment only to have it not be open. When these places finally do open in the afternoon, I'm already settled in and can't be bothered to go out. Clearly, the early bird does not catch the worm.

Morning coffee from Lovers and Madmen, Philadelphia, PA:
Iced coffee
(The closest coffee joint to my apartment; I pass this place every single time I have to go into the office but I never knew it had one of the best coffees in Philly according to several lists! They brew Counter Culture coffee, which is based in North Carolina but has several training locations, one of which is in Philly. I guess that's why a lot of coffee shops around here brew Counter Culture coffee. I've also heard that Stumptown and La Columbe are pretty prevalent as well but haven't had a chance to try them or the microbrews yet. This coffee was rather acidic, which was disappointing because it smelt great and the initial flavour burst was favourable. Maybe they didn't actually cold-brew this coffee or the beans were a lighter roast than I'm used to...)

20 August 2014

Okay, so I guess I'm a failure at eating out. But thirty seconds to walk to my kitchen versus thirty minutes (or more) to walk to some eatery? Efficiency matters here!

Breakfast:
Spaghetti w/green beans, spinach corn sauce & cayenne pepper
(My former flatmate left behind some spaghetti and half a jar of marinara sauce so I decided to use it. I figured green beans were angel hair pasta-esque so I just threw them in the pasta pot. The marinara sauce had a lot of garlic in it though, and I hate garlic. I might have gone a bit overboard with the corn and spinach, but I much prefer this than some garlicky tomato sauce. Also added in some almond flour and ground flaxseed to make the "tomato-based" sauce chunkier and more filling. Totally experimental, but it surprisingly worked! The sauce was actually quite creamy in the end and had a lot of complex subtle flavours.)

19 August 2014

Breakfast:
Roasted tofu & brussel sprouts, braised veggies, avocado slices w/cayenne pepper, quinoa & oatmeal medley

Monday, August 18, 2014

Ten days left!

And the countdown begins...

I'm going to try and hit up some eateries everyday most days since I only have ten days left, but it's going to be hard because (1) I have a lot of work, (2) it requires time since I walk everywhere and (3) my bank isn't as green as I'd like it to be.

Breakfast:
Roasted tofu & brussel sprouts, braised veggies, avocado slices w/cayenne pepper, quinoa & oatmeal medley
(Felt like a warm and savoury breakfast today.)

17 August 2014

It's the home stretch! In less than two weeks, I'm going to be a college senior and finally reunited with some of the greatest people I've had the chance of befriending.

Tomorrow marks my last full week in Philadelphia, aka the week where Joe and Ice-T become my right and left hand men.

Breakfast:
Frozen blueberries, frozen pineapple chunks, vanilla blueberry granola, dried cranberries, silvered almonds, walnut bits, cinnamon, ground flaxseed, pb, almond butter, dark chocolate chips, cacao nibs & flaxseed milk

Saturday, August 16, 2014

16 August 2014

Brunch:
Corn puffs, frozen blueberries, frozen pineapple chunks, walnut bits, silvered almonds, pb, almond butter, ground flaxseeds, cinnamon, cacao nibs, vanilla blueberry granola & flaxseed milk
(This was one chilly way to start a morning. Major brain freeze.)

Friday, August 15, 2014

Good-bye, Vy!

My flatmate is moving out today! So hey, come visit me - I just might have space for you.

Post-run drink from Ryan Crown's Juice Club, Philadelphia, PA:
Clear a Cell juice: carrots, cucumber, dandelion, celery, spinach, raw potato, lemongrass, burdock, echinacea A-, echinacea P-, milk thistle, Oregon grape, sarsaparilla & yellow dock
(The colour of this juice is wonky and I'm skeptical about raw potatoes but it tasted like diluted carrot juice. Slightly bitter, but it's not noticeable unless you're highly sensitive. Not my favourite juice in terms of taste, but it was refreshing after a run.)

14 August 2014

This is a week of unsettling events and though I've heard the phrase "losses come in threes", I just assumed it was a superstitious thing. Well, this week, losses really do come in threes.

Breakfast:
Quinoa, oats & flaxseed blend w/tofu veggie stir-fry & avocado slices w/cayenne pepper
(Hearty, hearty breakfast. I just bought some new avocados and they're so cute! I love cute, miniature fruits and vegetables.)

R.I.P. Lauren Bacall

I'm not into old, classic Hollywood films as much as my sister but even I appreciated Lauren Bacall's character, Schatze Page, in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953). One of my favourite scenes is when Schatze says,"marriage is the biggest thing you can do in life" but "if you don't marry him, you haven't caught him - he's caught you". The end of that monologue never fails to make me laugh.

There's a lot of things I don't agree about in this film but thematically, I think it's relevant to everyone. It's cold and calculating with witty (humorous) banter and the right amount of cheese, so if you're ever looking for a twisted rom-com to watch, give this a shot.

Breakfast:
Corn puffs, frozen blueberries, frozen pineapple chunks, silvered almonds, walnut bits, cacao nibs, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, ground flaxseeds, dark chocolate chips & flaxseed milk

Rainy, rainy Tuesday

I've finally had some time to process the death and it looks like the sky is processing the death of Robin Williams as well. Since I moved to Philly, the worst the weather's been is slightly drizzly but today, it was downright pouring. Sad, sad day.

In terms of public statements and processing, I think Sophia Bush's connected with me the most. It's a beautiful and heartfelt piece of writing, what she wrote is better than anything I could have ever penned regarding this.

Breakfast:
Carrot juice w/chia seeds

R.I.P. Robin Williams

My friends and I were lamenting about how the world just lost such an incredible, talented human being and we lost a part of our childhood.

Frankly, we're still in shock.

Breakfast:
Corn puffs w/frozen blueberries, frozen pineapple chunks, silvered almonds, walnut bits, almond butter, cayenne pepper, cinnamon & flaxseed milk

09 August 2014

Just started watching Chicago P.D. and man, I am hooked. While I'm frustrated that there's only one season out, I'm so relieved because this is a bad time to be getting caught up in a new series. Then again, I finished all fifteen episodes in one day so...

Breakfast:
Kale, spinach, blueberry, pineapple, mango, ground flaxseed & flaxseed milk smoothie topped w/cacao nibs
(Parched and starving after an intense cardio and Bikram yoga session. This was much, much needed. I don't know why I've been feeling so exhausted after a session lately; this has never happened before!)

08 August 2014

Spent Friday night re-watching Sailor Moon episodes, basically the cheesiest thing ever, but I've loved this animation since I was a wee youngin. It never gets old.

Breakfast:
Quinoa & oats w/seaweed, kale, spinach, avocado, broccoli, lime & cayenne pepper
(Craved something warm this morning and this was exactly it. Delicious mixture of creamy, nutty, spicy, sweet and sour. What more could I ask for?)

Thursday, August 07, 2014

Good-bye Woojin and Gino!

Hanging out with them for the last time since their summer program is coming to an end. They're leaving Philly while I'll still be here for a few weeks.

Breakfast from Ryan Crown's Juice Bar, Philadelphia, PA:
Alkaline forest: kale, cucumber, dandelion, parsley, celery, cilantro, dill & apple
(My first juice from here! I've been getting smoothies, but juices are always so much more refreshing. The apple didn't mask the taste of the veggies at all, but since I like tasting veggies in my juices, I quite liked it this way. This is a combination I'll have to remember.)

Wednesday, August 06, 2014

06 August 2014

Breakfast:
Quinoa w/tofu veggie stir-fry & sweet potato chunks
(I tried this without the avocado today and I think I like the flavours better. While the creaminess was lacking, I found that without the avocado, the grape tomatoes and courgette flavour profiles were expressed. The pieces of sweet potato also added some density, so this one was fulfilling pot!)

Tuesday, August 05, 2014

05 August 2014

Breakfast:
Chocolate cranberry oatmeal cookies
(The last of my cookies! They smelt so good that I couldn't resist eating them with my daily morning cup of tea.)

Monday, August 04, 2014

04 August 2014

It's my last four weeks in Philly!

Breakfast:
Matcha green tea, kale, swiss chard, spinach, pineapple, mango & flaxseed milk smoothie

Sunday, August 03, 2014

03 August 2014

Apparently there's a lot of national celebrations today: watermelon day, grab a nut day, friendship day, sisters day, etc.

Breakfast:
Yerba mate tea, quinoa black bean chips, grape tomatoes, mashed avocado w/lime & cayenne pepper

Saturday, August 02, 2014

Happy National Ice Cream Sandwich Day!

It's fun to acknowledge these whimsical holidays, don't you think so?

I didn't have the motivation to run four miles to buy a pint of almond milk-based ice cream at Whole Foods so I just baked some cookies à la Karlie Kloss and forwent the ice cream.

Breakfast:
Corn puffs, frozen pineapples chunks, frozen blueberries, frozen mango chunks, cacao nibs, cinnamon, ground flaxseed & almond butter w/flaxseed milk
(Three out of my top five favourite fruits are in this bowl! When I was on my way to the Bay Area from Los Angeles a couple years back, I sat near this guy who "could read people". I never told him my name nor my favourite fruits, but he guessed my name within three or so guesses and all five fruits correctly on the first try! It was unbelievable but oh so very freaky. I ran out of that terminal so quickly when we arrived.)

Happy Girlfriends' Day!

I think this day is just to celebrate that special bond between gals (❤ you guys!) - not the multiple partners someone might have but hey, if that's your interpretation, harmlessly go for it.

Breakfast:
Tofu veggie lasagna w/broccoli & kale
(Given that Amy's veggie lasagnas are frozen, I still can't believe how tasty they are! This is my first time trying the tofu one, but it was pretty damn good for a frozen meal. I don't know if Amy's original veggie lasagna changed though; the last time I tried one was back in high school. However, I knew the lasagna would be too salty, so I did add in extra greens, but I might have added a bit too much black pepper. Whoops.)
